A Tale of Surprising Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
During 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured I would book accommodation upon arrival, but once I got there, a large conference was taking place and all the youth hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.
As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could bed down in the airport – but quickly found Canberra airport, not like the one back home, closes 24 hours. Not knowing how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on public transport and began walking in the direction of a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend the evening somewhere that stayed open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the next morning, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more individuals like that woman.
I must have looked lost because a young woman saw me loitering in the city center and inquired if I was OK. I recounted my predicament and right away she suggested I could sleep on the floor at her university residence at ANU – a perfect solution, as that’s where the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering me some free dinner: a leftover filled rolls she had from her part-time job. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot to rest for the evening.
Looking back, it’s clear to me the significant risk she accepted as a young woman inviting a male stranger who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. In those days I was in my own unawareness and was oblivious to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she did that – but still deeply appreciative.
I never did go to that university, and I didn’t meet her again, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of human compassion. I hope life has rewarded her act of kindness tenfold. Our society requires more individuals like that woman.
