California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections are over.
"Absolutely, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor remarked when pressed about giving serious thought to a White House bid following the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."
The governor's current term as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he cautioned that any choice is a long way off.
"Fate will determine that," he said.
Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic
The California governor has emerged as a notable adversary of the former president's team, employing his digital presence and championing a initiative that would expand the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This move has drawn criticism from critics.
Clash on Transportation
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a recent segment on Fox News. The secretary announced plans to pull federal funds from the state and suggested eliminating the state's ability to provide commercial driver's licenses.
"I'm about to pull $160m from California," he said, after a recently reported deadly accident in the state involving an undocumented commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.
Newsom's office noted that the U.S. government had renewed the worker's status repeatedly, which enabled him to secure a CDL under U.S. law.
Duffy had earlier announced he was holding back $40m from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for CDL holders.
Strong Response from the Administration
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a last month's statement addressing Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
Voter Sentiment and Political Future
A recently conducted poll showed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters said that Newsom must consider running for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has risen to an typical level of 33.5% from previous levels, while his unfavorability has decreased from an average of over 40% to current figures.
Earlier this year, the governor commented while traveling several swing states that he had "no idea" about his future for 2028.
He mentioned his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.
"The notion that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, amazing," he stated. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
