Chainsaw Man Dominates Domestic Cinema Earnings in First Weekend

Did Sony repeated their success? Coming after the box office performance of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed over $600 million worldwide, the latest Chainsaw Man film has reached beyond the $100 million milestone globally, hitting a global total of $108M this weekend. The film beat out the horror sequel Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its sophomore frame in theaters, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).

Notable Domestic and Global Performance

Helmed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a straightforward follow-up of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It earned over $18 million in North America after a strong five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday earnings and $4.5 million Sunday take. Globally, the animated by MAPPA feature grossed $14.7M across 46 global regions, bringing its global earnings to over $60 million via Sony ($43.1M abroad, $18.2 million stateside). The studio has not yet revealed its final earnings figure.

Parallels to Other Blockbuster Anime Movies

Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment noted in prior discussions, drawing parallels between the feature's anticipated earnings to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the domestic market in the year 2022 and opened to a nearly identical $18M in the U.S.. This movie's opening frame is in line with that standard, while its $108 million worldwide total currently tracks a bit short of the earlier film's $166.6M final run. Although it’s unlikely Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will earn the numbers of mega hit the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a significant success for the distributor.

Marketing Campaigns Boost Performance

Sony and its subsidiary the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have successfully utilized fan engagement to drive their leadership at the animated movie market. The Reze Arc marketing campaign launched at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in summer with a MAPPA panel, unique experiences, and Pochita-themed pictures, and later included a significant involvement at NYCC showcasing never-before-seen content, audience giveaways, and further MAPPA discussions. Moreover, organizers held an private showing for enthusiasts for the public and content creators as well after the final day of the convention.

What’s Next

2025 stands as a big year for animated films, and for the company, which has an additional animated movie releasing in 2025 in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
