Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated outrage after the ex-president charged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and penalized "by death" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Recording That Sparked the Debate
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in defense or defense positions.
"Similar to us, you all swore an oath to protect and uphold this constitution," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our constitution are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can reject improper directives, you can refuse unlawful commands, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to follow directives that break the legal system or our national charter."
Trump's Incensed Reply
The clip seemed to trigger a angry reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Dangerous to our United States. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives React
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader issued a combined announcement condemning the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no role in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who participated in the video all served our United States with tremendous loyalty and honor. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's appalling and risky death threats against members of Congress, and urge Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to make certain the security of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged digital publications and withdraw his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the announcement continued.
Representatives' Firm Reaction
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who value this nation and took an pledge to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they declared. "That oath is permanent, and we intend to keep it. No threat, pressure, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred obligation."
"The significant point is that the president views it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the law," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and obligation to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "Every American must join forces and censure the ex-president's requests for our murder and political violence. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Further Partisan Reactions
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's statements and published on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This represents an clear THREAT. All senators, each house member, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and without qualification."
The Conservative official defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling troops to disobey orders, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."
The Republican leader also reportedly told journalists that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and determine all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Does the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the former president is addressing," the official declared. "You have sitting members of the federal government who coordinated to organize a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers urging them to defy the commander in chief's proper directives."
She said: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the chain of command, and if that system is compromised, it can cause people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are essentially promoting."
