U.S. actor and playwright Jeremy O Harris, best known for the Tony-nominated production Slave Play, was taken into custody last month at an international terminal in Japan on allegations involving trying to bring in illegal drugs into the country, authorities announced.

Details of the Airport Incident

Harris, 36, was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a customs officer found 0.78 grams of a crystal material laced with the designer drug MDMA in his personal bag, according to a official statement.

He was promptly taken into custody on suspicion of breaching Japan’s stringent Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Regional customs officials lodged a formal complaint with the public prosecutor to initiate legal action against the individual.

Present Situation and Legal Counsel

A law enforcement representative in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, confirmed that Harris remains in custody. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has acknowledged the charges.

Presently, it is not known whether the artist has secured a defense attorney in Japan. Requests for comment to his representatives were not answered at once.

Authorities stated Harris had traveled to Okinawa for tourism, journeying from Britain with a layover in Taiwan. Okinawa is a frequent tourist spot south-west of Tokyo, famous for its beaches and U.S. bases.
