This episode commenced with a single photograph, possibly the most significant ever captured of a member of the monarchy.

There stood the Earl of Inverness, standing closely beside a female youth, while another individual beamed suggestively in the background.

Without that photograph, captured at a gathering in 2001, it would have been difficult to accept the assertions of a teenager who declared she was moved across the ocean and compelled to have cursory intimate contact with a prince of the monarchy?

A curious, indicative action by someone who had publicly claimed to have no been aware of her, asserted he could never have had relations with her, and yet paid a substantial sum of his mother's resources to settle a drawn-out legal case.

Years of Disgrace

Considering this, talk of the royals acting firmly to cut Andrew off are misguided. This scandal has continued for the majority of 15 years since that image, and a further image of Andrew walking amiably with a notorious individual came to light.

• Self-importance: To what extent did his family members, maybe even his relatives, realize that Andrew was so self-entitled?
• Problematic Connections: They must have realized, if his staff and the police were doing their jobs, that he had some extremely unsavory friends given he openly welcomed them to estates.
• Financial Extravagance: If the household did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his overspending with taxpayer funds.

Journeys were documented in official documents: helicopter transfers from the royal residence to a country club and back again in time for dining, private flights instead of commercial flights, all for the comfort of "Airmiles Andy".

World of Deference

Additionally the entitlement which required deference when he appeared in a space or the profound consciousness about his honorifics used on his letterheads in letters to his personal acquaintances.

He managed to escape consequences while his mother, who strangely pampered him, was still alive. The monarch did at least revoke him of official roles and ceremonial ranks in the aftermath of his catastrophic and, it is now clear, untruthful media appearance six years ago.

Current Situation

Merely in the last two weeks that events accelerated, following the issuance of accounts giving more grim particulars of his conduct and that of his associates.

Additional revelations have again highlighted Andrew's belief that he could escape being untruthful about his contact with a notorious figure.

People (and the press) were far ahead of the monarchy. There was not a single person of any importance to support him, a consequence of all those years of presumption.

Monarchical Concerns

The more intelligent monarchical figures realized that. The one imperative is to transfer the crown, if not as previously at least whole and unblemished.

Over time the last 190 years trying to overcome the image of past sovereigns, proving they are valuable, responsible and responsive to their citizens.

His actions endangered all that in jeopardy in an age when respect and secrecy is no longer adequate.

The Fallout

Ultimately, the notoriously hesitant monarch was pressured additional. There was little choice. The institution had relinquished authority of the account.

Now it is the stripping of honorifics and the persistent and life-long public humiliation that will hurt Andrew the most.

• Downgrading: Demoted to just a private citizen
• Past Example: The first member to surrender his titles in recent history
• Military Service: Particularly stinging given his role in the Falklands war

He continues to be a constitutional officer, on paper able to stand in for the king, and he is still in the lineage to the monarchy, but neither of these will ever happen.

Coming Developments

Will people he meets still defer to him? Will they still make mistakes and call him Your Highness? Would they say Andrew,

Naturally, he is not moving to a common area, but to the royal family's extensive property at Sandringham.

In that place, he will be provided by the monarch with one of the estate properties and given some type of private allowance.

This differs from his previous residence, where he paid a token lease for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit remote, but even so it may not be far enough.

Outstanding Concerns

Matters remain unresolved. There are still records in the possession of overseas authorities to be revealed.

• Political Pressure: Might lawmakers request additional information
• Financial Investigation: Or examine the improper use of taxpayer funds
• Criminal Investigation: There may even be a police investigation into his actions

Maybe for the present the institutional damage to the monarchy is contained. The narrative from the institution was evidently that the stripping of designations was what the sovereign, and particularly other senior royals, desired.

A Shift in Position

The cessation of illusion that Andrew was acting willingly. And, notably, the brief communication showed clearly that the monarchy were aligning with the victim's narrative of incidents.

Furthermore, for the premiere occasion they finally showed regard for the affected individuals: "The measures are deemed necessary, regardless of the fact that he maintains his innocence of the claims against him."

Ultimately it is entitlement, self-seeking and laziness that will destroy the institution. In his foolishness, personal excess and corruption, Andrew appears never to have grasped that truth.
