Israeli citizens observe two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks proceed
Israelis have come together across the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"The aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed official remembrance events until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held throughout the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the plan.
A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the discussions indicated that an night meeting of indirect talks started at 7 PM local time.
The representative stated the morning session concluded without significant progress, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He commented that the talks are "challenging and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to close the gaps between the both parties.
Essential Matters in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for assistance deliveries
- Future administration of the area
Public Reaction
In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere feels like home now and until every captive return no one will be secure."
"After we see everyone home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty continue in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester a participant stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that around 70% of the population want the war to finish in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Situation
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.
From the site, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the main city, bombardments were noted in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and zone districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"When the evening arrives, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had accepted the corpses of several people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported another two dead people had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the southern area, health workers stated.
