Weather experts are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated over large parts of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are planned to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be essential," stated the weather service.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be cold, meaning additional clothing essential, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to allow extra time for travel on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on trains and buses.

The Mercury Forecast to Drop Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Advisories Activated

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this meant the weather was likely to cause major effects across medical and care provision. This includes a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.

The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is completely paramount.
