New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police issued surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
