A whistleblower has told an official investigation that the UK failed to secure classified equipment allowing the militant group to locate Afghans that had served with western forces.

Data Breach Endangers Thousands at Risk

The source, called Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the security lapse were told to relocate and change their phone numbers to avoid detection from the Taliban.

Members of Parliament are looking into the Conservative government's handling of a massive breach of personal details involving almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to come to the UK to avoid the regime.

How the Leak Happened

A spreadsheet with confidential details, such as names, contact details and in some cases household data, was accidentally leaked by an official employed at UK special forces headquarters in early 2022.

The incident was discovered only in August 2023, when details of nine people who had sought to move to Britain surfaced on Facebook.

Many believe there's this misconception that Afghan rulers are without comparable resources that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. If they have your phone number, they can locate your precise location. That is what the unit achieved.”

Under inquiry about if militant forces possessed sophisticated technology, the whistleblower confirmed: “They have complete capability.”

Impact of the Security Lapse

Early investigations provided to the investigation estimated that at least 49 family members and co-workers of individuals impacted by the incident had been executed.

A superinjunction about the incident was put in force in late 2023 and prevented any information concerning it from being made public until recently.

Safety Measures

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with advised affected households they were assisting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been breached”.

“We advised that they change residence if they could and altered their contact details. These represented the primary information that, should militant forces acquired these details, would result in their location being found,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower argued that government assessment performed by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to state that the obtaining of the information by the regime was “unlikely to substantially change current risk levels”.

“The important fact is that these individuals are not confronting militant forces; they live secretly. All concerns relate to past work history.”

She detailed terrible abuse suffered by affected individuals, involving electric shock torture, waterboarding, and physical abuse.

“There are cases of toddlers who have had limbs fractured to pressure the family to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
