The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
