UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a young woman containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
