Virginia's New Governor Creates History as Virginia's Initial Woman State Leader

Over many decades, Virginia has been led by seventy-four governors, all of them male. Recently, Abigail Spanberger overcame this longstanding tradition by winning the election as the first female governor in the commonwealth's records.

Centered Around Cost-of-Living Concerns and Strategic Opposition

The former US representative and Central Intelligence Agency operative succeeded with a campaign that stressed economic pressures and carefully opposed Donald Trump's policies rather than the person.

Beginnings and Education

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey on a summer day in 1979, she moved to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at thirteen. Her dad was an army veteran who subsequently pursued a career in law enforcement; her mom was a healthcare professional and community helper.

She attended the UVA, obtaining a degree in literary arts. Post-graduation, she worked briefly as a educator before turning to a career in public service.

“I was raised believing that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” Spanberger shared with supporters at a rally in the city of Norfolk recently.

Government Roles

At the US Postal Inspection Service, she investigated involving narcotics, child predators and money launderers. She served search and arrest warrants, frequently being the only woman on the arrest team. She then joined the CIA and concentrated on counter-terrorism cases, serving undercover and internationally.

Personal Crossroads

In 2014, she and her spouse, an technical professional, reached a career crossroads. Residing on the Pacific coast, they were considering another overseas assignment. They pulled out a globe and asked their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because “all our loved ones lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we decided to transition from a national duty, to state involvement because she was right. Those dear to us are in Virginia.”

Political Beginnings

Back in Virginia, she participated in a grassroots group, which works against gun violence, and started a youth group. In 2017, she chose to campaign for the House, which advisers told her was a “crazy endeavour” because the party hadn't had won the congressional seat in 50 years.

“But I observed what Donald Trump was doing with his executive power and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I noticed my member of Congress repeatedly work against the healthcare law. And I knew I had to step up. So for the record: I succeeded.”

Bipartisan Reputation

In the capital, she rapidly became associated with the Blue Dog Coalition, a collection of moderate and budget-conscious Democrats. She concentrated on lower-profile issues: bringing internet access to the countryside, combating narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She earned a standing for working with Republicans and was frequently recognized as the most bipartisan representative of the Virginia delegation. She was vocal about political rhetoric that she believed turned off moderate voters, warning her party against partisan language that could be weaponised in swing areas.

The "Mod Squad"

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was labeled a part of the “centrist alliance” in opposition to the left-leaning “group” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Gubernatorial Campaign

In November 2023, she announced she would step down for a fourth term and would rather run for governor in 2025.

Her platform focused on ideas of civic duty, advocacy for schools and infrastructure and defense of governing systems. Her CIA background gave her credibility on defense issues and she spoke of government work as a vocation instead of a career.

Win Over Opponent

This helped her to withstand Republican opponent Winsome Earle-Sears’s attacks on cultural issues, including the assertion that she is an radical on civil rights and health care for transgender people.

The governor-elect, who maintained that communities should determine whether transgender students can participate in school athletics, cast her opponent as the candidate more out of step with the middle of the Virginia electorate.
