Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
