What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 people were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the victims who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She described the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in a critical state. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
